Türkiye Scholarships 2027 (Türkiye Bursları) for International Students

The Türkiye Scholarships 2027 application opens on 10 January 2027 and closes on 20 February 2027. You have about 7 months to get ready. Most applicants will rush into the portal in the final week, fight a crashing system, and submit incomplete documents. You can be in the other group.

Türkiye Bursları is one of the largest fully funded government scholarship programs in the world. Around 5,000 international students are selected each year out of more than 165,000 applicants from 170+ countries. Nigerian, Ghanaian, Egyptian, Kenyan, Ugandan, Sudanese, and South African scholars have all won spots in recent cohorts.

The acceptance rate sits between 2% and 5%. It rewards the prepared. This guide shows you how to be in that group.

What Türkiye Bursları 2027 actually is and why African applicants miss this scholarship

Türkiye Bursları (officially called Türkiye Scholarships) is the Turkish government's flagship scholarship program, administered by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). It funds international students at every academic level: undergraduate, master's, PhD, and short-term research.

What makes it different from most government scholarships is the centralised system. You do not need a Turkish university admission letter before you apply. YTB places you in one of your 12 chosen university and program preferences after you are selected. Tuition, housing, monthly stipend, flights, health insurance, and even a free year of Turkish language training are all part of the package.

The scholarship also opens up serious doors. Turkey runs the world's third largest hospital system, has one of the fastest-growing economies in the OECD, and trains scholars who go on to work in Turkish embassies, multinational companies operating in Africa, and academic institutions globally.

Türkiye Scholarships 2027 application timeline and deadlines

Mark these dates today.

Stage Date Application portal opens 10 January 2027 Application portal closes 20 February 2027 Shortlist for interviews announced April to June 2027 Interviews (online or at Turkish missions abroad) June to July 2027 Final results announced July to August 2027 Turkish language preparation year begins September 2027 Degree program begins September 2028 (after language year)

The application portal is open for only 41 days. By the time you sit down to apply in January 2027, every document on the required list should already be ready, scanned, and uploadable in under an hour.

The full process from application to first day of classes takes nearly two years. Be patient with the timeline. Be ruthless with your preparation now.

Who is eligible to apply for Türkiye Bursları 2027

Run yourself through this checklist before you commit hours to the application.

Citizenship. You must be a citizen of any country other than Turkey. Holders of Turkish citizenship (including dual citizens with Turkish nationality) are not eligible. Almost every other nationality is accepted, including all 54 African countries.

Age limits by level (firm cutoffs):

  • Undergraduate / Associate degree applicants: under 21 at time of application

  • Master's applicants: under 30

  • PhD applicants: under 35

  • Research scholarship applicants: under 50

If you miss the age cap for one level, look at the next level up. Don't try to bend the rules.

Academic record minimums:

  • Undergraduate: minimum 70% average (90% for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine)

  • Master's: minimum 75% average

  • PhD: minimum 75% average

Prior degree status. For undergraduate applications, you must be graduating from secondary school no earlier than the current academic year. For master's and PhD applications, you must have completed (or be on track to complete) the relevant prior degree by August 2027.

Language proficiency. Not required at application stage. The mandatory Turkish language year handles this after you are selected. If your chosen program is taught in English, you'll need a TOEFL or IELTS score (program-specific).

Application limits. You can submit only one Türkiye Bursları application per cycle. Multiple submissions disqualify all of them.

If you are above the age limits or want a different European route, the Mandela Washington Fellowship goes up to age 35 for African leaders, and the DAAD Scholarship for Germany has more flexible age rules.

The mandatory Turkish language year you need to know about before applying

This is the part most African applicants underestimate.

Every Türkiye Bursları scholar without an existing C1 Turkish certificate must complete a one-year Turkish language preparation course at a TÖMER centre. This is non-negotiable. It applies even if your degree program is taught in English. The reasoning: YTB wants every scholar to integrate into Turkish society and use Turkish in daily life on campus.

Three honest realities about the language year:

You won't start your actual degree until September 2028 if selected in 2027. The language year sits between your scholarship award and your degree. Plan your career timeline accordingly.

TÖMER is intense. Five days a week, around four to six hours per day of classroom instruction, plus homework. You will live and breathe Turkish.

Passing TÖMER C1 does not automatically mean you can write academic papers in Turkish. If you are placed in a Turkish-medium program, plan for an additional year or two of harder academic work as you build fluency in your subject area.

If a one-year language detour does not fit your timeline, look at the Schwarzman Scholars program or the Yenching Academy at Peking University, where Chinese is built into your master's degree without delaying the start.

How the 12 university preferences system actually works in your favour

Unlike most scholarships where you apply to a single university, Türkiye Bursları lets you list up to 12 university and program preferences in your application. YTB then matches you to one of them based on your academic profile, your preferences order, and university quotas.

Three strategy tips that improve your odds:

Mix prestigious and accessible universities in your 12. A list with only Boğaziçi, METU, and Istanbul University across all 12 preferences is unrealistic. Include some less famous but still strong universities in cities outside Istanbul and Ankara. Atatürk University in Erzurum, Erciyes University in Kayseri, and Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon receive fewer applications and have higher placement odds for international scholars.

Order matters. Your top three preferences are weighted most heavily. Put your strongest fits there based on your background, not just brand recognition.

Match programs to your CV. A Nigerian medical doctor applying for a master's in international relations will lose to one applying for a master's in public health, even at the same university. Choose programs your CV actually supports.

The placement system gives you 12 shots. Use them smartly.

How to write a Türkiye Bursları motivation letter that gets shortlisted

Your statement of purpose (also called motivation letter) is the document that decides everything. The interview comes only if your written application clears the bar.

YTB selectors are reading tens of thousands of these letters. The ones that get shortlisted share three things:

A specific story, not a CV in paragraph form. Don't write "I have a passion for engineering." Write "In April 2024, I built a low-cost water filtration system for my grandmother's village in Ekiti State that now serves 38 households." Specific. Dated. Measurable.

A direct connection to Turkey. Why Turkey specifically? Not "I love Turkish culture." Instead: "Turkey's investment in mass transit systems in Istanbul and Ankara matches the exact infrastructure challenges I want to bring back to Lagos. Studying urban planning at METU under Professor X aligns my future research with Türkiye's lived expertise."

A clear return plan. YTB invests in scholars who will represent Turkey's soft power abroad. Show them how you will work with Turkish institutions or businesses, contribute to Türkiye-Africa cooperation, or carry Turkish expertise back home.

Start drafting your motivation letter in August 2026. Write ugly first drafts. Get one trusted reader (a mentor, a former YTB scholar, a professor) to give you direct feedback by October. Revise weekly through November and December. By the time the portal opens in January, your letter should already be polished.

Common questions African applicants ask about Türkiye Scholarships

I am Nigerian. How many spots are reserved for Nigerians each year?

YTB does not publish exact country quotas, but thousands of Nigerians apply each year for roughly a dozen spots. Strong academic records, clear motivation, and well-chosen university preferences improve your odds significantly. The competition is brutal but not impossible.

Do I need to speak Turkish to apply?

No. Türkiye Bursları includes a one-year Turkish language preparation course at TÖMER for every scholar without an existing C1 Turkish certificate. You start the language year in September 2027 and your degree begins September 2028.

My GPA is around 65% on a Nigerian scale. Am I eligible?

For undergraduate applications, you need at least 70%. For master's and PhD, you need at least 75%. If your transcript shows 65%, you are below the formal cutoff and your application will likely be filtered out at the document review stage.

Is there an application fee?

No. Türkiye Bursları is completely free to apply for. Any website asking you to pay to apply is a scam.

Can I bring my family if I am selected?

The scholarship funds one person only. Family reunion visas are possible, but your stipend will not cover spouse or children. Most YTB scholars come alone.

Can I work part-time during my studies?

Rules technically allow limited part-time work, but the language year plus degree workload makes it impractical, especially in the first two years.

My target degree is in English. Do I still need to do the Turkish language year?

Yes. The mandatory year applies to every scholar without an existing C1 Turkish certificate, even if your degree is taught in English. This is non-negotiable.

If Türkiye Bursları doesn't work out, what are good alternatives?

For African applicants, the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship for South African universities, the Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford, and the SBW Berlin Scholarship are strong adjacent options. For PhD candidates specifically, the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship Doctoral program is worth considering.

Three moves to make this month before January 2027

You have 7 months. Use them in this order.

This week. Confirm your eligibility against the age and GPA cutoffs above. If you clear both, scan all your academic documents (transcripts, certificates, national ID/passport) into clean PDFs. Save them in one folder you will return to in January.

This month. Research 30 Turkish universities and programs that match your background. Narrow your list to 12 strong preferences. Save the official program pages and admission requirements for each.

By end of August 2026. Draft your motivation letter. Specific story, direct Turkey connection, clear return plan. Get one trusted reader to give you feedback by mid-September.

When the portal opens on 10 January 2027, everything you need will already be ready. You'll spend a calm two hours uploading documents while 165,000 other applicants panic. That difference decides scholarships.
