KU Leuven Scholarships 2027 for International Students

KU Leuven Scholarships 2027 for International Students | Fully Funded Master's, PhD, and Region-Specific Awards (Deadlines, GPA, How to Apply)

KU Leuven runs at least six different scholarship paths for international students and most applicants only know one of them. That is why most applicants lose.

You arrived on the right page. Read carefully. Within the next ten minutes you will know which KU Leuven scholarship fits your profile, what its specific deadline is, and which two windows in the academic calendar decide everything for 2027-2028 entry.

For context, KU Leuven is Belgium's highest-ranked university and one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1425. It consistently ranks among the global top 50 universities. About 60 of its master's programmes are taught entirely in English. The international student community is among the largest in continental Europe.

That is the easy part to know. The funding architecture is where most students get lost. Let's untangle it.

KU Leuven scholarship 2027: the six funded paths most international students never discover

KU Leuven does not have a single "KU Leuven Scholarship." It has a portfolio of distinct schemes, each with its own eligibility, deadline, and benefit structure. Here is the full landscape:

One: the Science@Leuven Scholarship: for international students entering a master's programme in the Faculty of Science. Worth up to a substantial fee waiver plus partial living support.

Two: the KU Leuven Master Mind nomination: KU Leuven is one of the host institutions for the Government of Flanders Master Mind Scholarship. KU Leuven can nominate up to 20 candidates each year. We have a separate detailed guide on the Master Mind Scholarship.

Three: KU Leuven Scholarship for Central and South America: region-specific funding for applicants from Latin America entering specific master's programmes.

Four: KU Leuven Scholarship for Africa: region-specific awards for African applicants in selected programmes.

Five: Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme: fully funded PhD positions for applicants from countries on the OECD Development Assistance Committee list.

Six: VLIR-UOS ICP Connect Scholarship at KU Leuven: KU Leuven hosts several VLIR-UOS-funded master's programmes for students from 29 designated developing countries. We cover this in detail in our VLIR-UOS guide.

Plus a handful of smaller, programme-specific awards and Erasmus Mundus joint master's degrees that KU Leuven co-delivers with European partners.

You only need to focus on one or two of these. The rest of this guide helps you figure out which.

Science@Leuven Scholarship 2027: the path most science master's applicants miss

If your master's interest sits in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, biochemistry, geography, geology, astronomy, statistics, or any other Faculty of Science programme at KU Leuven, this is your scholarship before all others.

The Science@Leuven Scholarship is funded by the Faculty of Science and its alumni association. It is awarded to roughly 10 to 15 international students each year. Worth knowing:

The award covers your full master's tuition fees for one academic year, plus basic health insurance and contribution toward living expenses. The exact amount granted varies by applicant, with the maximum award reaching a substantial sum that meaningfully reduces the financial barrier to studying in Leuven.

Eligibility filter most blogs skip:

  • You must be applying for a Faculty of Science international master's programme at KU Leuven

  • Your bachelor's degree must be from outside Belgium and must give you access to the chosen master's

  • You must not currently hold a master's degree or PhD (this is a fresh-master's scholarship)

  • You must not have previously studied or worked at KU Leuven

  • You need IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL iBT 94 minimum

  • You need a strong academic record, typically equivalent to a First Class or High Second Class

The Science@Leuven deadline is 15 February 2027 for the 2027-2028 cycle (based on the 2026-2027 pattern). You apply through a separate scholarship application after applying for admission to your chosen Faculty of Science master's.

Two practical truths:

The scholarship extends into the second year of your two-year master's only if you achieve excellent grades in year one. The first year results decide your second year funding.

Even if you receive the maximum award, plan for additional personal expenses. Books, supplies, an annual trip home, and unforeseen costs add up. The scholarship is a serious head start, not a complete free ride.

KU Leuven Master Mind nomination: the January 15 deadline that closes everything early

KU Leuven sits at the heart of the Government of Flanders Master Mind Scholarship system. It is one of the participating Flemish institutions and it can nominate up to 20 candidates each year for the global pool of about 30 awards.

What makes the KU Leuven path distinctive within Master Mind:

The internal KU Leuven deadline is mid-January for the following academic year. For the 2026-2027 cycle, the deadline was 15 January 2026 at 23:59 CET. Expect the 2027-2028 deadline around the same date in January 2027.

This is the earliest deadline of any Master Mind host institution. Ghent, Antwerp, VUB, and Hasselt all close their internal Master Mind windows later, sometimes by two to three months. If KU Leuven is your target, you cannot drift into Master Mind preparation in February. You must have everything submitted by mid-January.

The KU Leuven process also includes a unique stage that other host institutions do not always require: if you are nominated, you must submit a one-minute motivational video by mid-March as part of the next selection phase. Most applicants discover this requirement after their nomination and have to scramble. Plan now to have a video draft ready before mid-March 2027.

The full detail of how Master Mind works, the 3.5 GPA floor, the priority country reserved spots, the Mobility Online tool, and more is in our Master Mind Scholarship 2027 guide.

KU Leuven scholarships for African students: which paths actually work for Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya

If you are African, here is the honest map of which KU Leuven scholarships are open to your country:

Open to all African nationalities including Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, and others:

  • Master Mind Scholarship (via KU Leuven nomination)

  • Science@Leuven Scholarship (Faculty of Science only)

  • KU Leuven Scholarship for Africa (region-specific, programme-restricted)

  • Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships (for PhD applicants only)

Restricted to 29 specific countries (Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt NOT included):

  • VLIR-UOS ICP Connect Scholarship at KU Leuven

If you are from Cameroon, DR Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Senegal, South Africa, or any of the other 19 VLIR-UOS-eligible African countries, the VLIR-UOS path is often the strongest fit. The award covers your tuition, monthly living allowance, return airfare, insurance, and visa costs. Read our full VLIR-UOS guide before applying.

If you are Nigerian, Ghanaian, or Egyptian, VLIR-UOS is closed to you. Your strongest paths to KU Leuven funding are Master Mind and the KU Leuven Scholarship for Africa. The Africa scholarship is a partial award that often combines with KU Leuven tuition reductions to make studying meaningfully affordable.

If you are Francophone African with two or more years of professional experience, also look at the ARES Scholarship for French-speaking Belgian universities, which sit outside the KU Leuven system.

Global Minds Doctoral Scholarship: KU Leuven's PhD funding for the global south

For PhD-level applicants, KU Leuven runs the Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme, separate from all the master's-level paths above.

What it covers:

A monthly stipend that comfortably covers living costs in Belgium, basic health insurance, an allowance for research-related travel, and full tuition for the doctoral programme. The scholarship runs for the standard duration of a KU Leuven PhD, typically four years.

Who it picks:

Citizens of countries on the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list, which covers most of Africa, much of Asia, and parts of Latin America. Your country qualifies if it appears on the current DAC list, updated by the OECD every few years.

You must also have a master's degree, demonstrate strong research capability, and have a proposed research direction that fits one of KU Leuven's research groups. Crucially, you must have a KU Leuven supervisor willing to host your PhD before you can apply.

That last detail is the filter most PhD applicants underestimate. Without a confirmed supervisor at KU Leuven, the Global Minds application does not move. Plan to spend the months from June to September 2026 identifying potential supervisors, emailing them about your research interests, and securing their commitment. By the time the Global Minds call opens, your supervisor relationship must already exist.

Calls typically open in autumn, with deadlines around October to December for the following September start. Watch the KU Leuven international PhD page from September 2026 for the 2027 cycle dates.

KU Leuven Region Scholarships: Africa, Asia, Latin America-specific awards

In addition to the main schemes, KU Leuven operates region-specific scholarships funded by its International Office. These are smaller in number than Master Mind but easier to access for the right candidates.

KU Leuven Scholarship for Central and South America funds master's students from Latin American countries entering specific KU Leuven programmes. The scholarship offers a partial tuition contribution plus eligibility for combination with other KU Leuven awards.

KU Leuven Scholarship for Africa is similar in structure, covering applicants from across the African continent entering selected master's programmes. The award is partial, but it can be stacked with university-level tuition reductions to bring the net cost down meaningfully.

These regional scholarships do not get the global search attention of Master Mind, which means competition per spot is lower. If your file is strong but not exceptional, these are realistic targets.

Application is typically integrated into your KU Leuven master's admission application. You indicate scholarship interest during the admission process, and the International Office reviews shortlists in parallel with the admission decision.

KU Leuven scholarship eligibility: the GPA, English, and prior-study restrictions you must clear

Across all KU Leuven scholarships, certain eligibility patterns repeat. Take three minutes to check yourself against these now:

Academic record. Most KU Leuven scholarships expect a strong First Class or high Upper Second Class bachelor's degree, equivalent to a GPA of 3.5 or higher on the 4.0 scale. The Scholaro tool is the standard converter. If your conversion comes in below 3.3, your competitive odds drop sharply.

English language proficiency. KU Leuven's English-taught master's programmes typically require:

  • IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (no band below 6.0)

  • TOEFL iBT 94 overall

  • Cambridge English C2 Proficiency

  • Some programmes accept a Medium of Instruction letter if your bachelor's was taught entirely in English

The Faculty of Science generally accepts MOI letters from English-medium undergraduate institutions. The Faculty of Economics and Business often requires IELTS regardless. Check your specific programme's English requirement on its KU Leuven page.

Prior study at KU Leuven. Most KU Leuven scholarships (including Master Mind and Science@Leuven) require that you have not previously studied or worked at KU Leuven. Erasmus+ credit mobility at KU Leuven does not count as previous enrollment and is acceptable.

Prior degrees. Several KU Leuven scholarships require that you have not yet completed a master's degree. The award is intended to fund your first master's-level qualification, not a second master's.

Programme eligibility. Each scholarship restricts which master's programmes qualify. Master Mind covers most KU Leuven master's programmes. Science@Leuven is limited to Faculty of Science programmes. The Africa and Latin America scholarships have their own programme lists.

Check the specific scholarship page on kuleuven.be for the exact eligible programme list before committing.

How to apply for KU Leuven scholarships in 2027 (the order matters)

For every KU Leuven scholarship, the application order is fixed. Get this sequence wrong and your application falls apart.

Step 1: Choose your master's programme at KU Leuven. The KU Leuven course catalogue lists every English-taught and Dutch-taught master's programme. Pick the one your background fits.

Step 2: Confirm the scholarship pathway available for that programme. Each programme page lists the scholarships that combine with it. Some programmes are eligible for Master Mind and Science@Leuven both. Others are eligible for only one. Read carefully.

Step 3: Apply for admission to the master's programme through the KU Leuven application portal. The admission process opens between October and November 2026 for September 2027 entry. Deadlines vary by programme, typically February to April 2027 for non-EEA international applicants.

Step 4: Inside your admission application, signal your scholarship interest. Some scholarships require a separate Candidacy Form to be uploaded as an annexe. The Master Mind candidacy form must be submitted by 15 January 2027 if you are applying through KU Leuven. The Science@Leuven scholarship has its own form with a 15 February 2027 deadline.

Step 5: Wait for outcomes in parallel. Master Mind decisions are announced in April or May. Science@Leuven decisions come out around April. Master's admission decisions arrive separately.

Step 6: If you are nominated for Master Mind, prepare your one-minute motivational video by mid-March 2027. Treat this as seriously as an interview.

Step 7: If you are admitted and awarded, accept your offer and begin visa preparation. Belgian student visa processing for Nigerian, Indian, Pakistani, and many other applicants can take 6 to 10 weeks. Apply at your local Belgian embassy as soon as you have your acceptance letter.

KU Leuven scholarship deadlines for 2027-2028 entry: the calendar that decides everything

Mark these in your calendar today. Adjust slightly as KU Leuven publishes specific dates for the 2027-2028 cycle.

Mid-January 2027: KU Leuven Master Mind candidacy form deadline. The earliest scholarship deadline in the Flemish system.

15 February 2027: Science@Leuven Scholarship deadline. Faculty of Science only.

February to April 2027: Non-EEA international admission deadlines for various KU Leuven master's programmes. Earlier programmes (business, economics, engineering) often close in February. Most close by March or April.

October to December 2026: Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships call typically opens, with deadlines extending through December for the September 2027 PhD start.

Mid-March 2027: Master Mind motivational video deadline (for nominated candidates).

April to May 2027: Master Mind and Science@Leuven final decisions announced.

September 2027: Programme starts.

Working backwards from September 2027, your latest practical start date for serious application work is August or September 2026. That gives you four to five months to identify programmes, prepare documents, and refine your candidacy. Start later than that and you compress your work into a panic window.

Frequently asked questions

My GPA on Scholaro converts to 3.4. Am I in the game for Master Mind or Science@Leuven?

For Master Mind, 3.4 is below the explicit 3.5 floor and your nomination by KU Leuven is unlikely. For Science@Leuven, the academic bar is set by the Faculty of Science admission committee rather than a fixed GPA number, so a 3.4 with otherwise strong credentials (research experience, publications, strong references) can still compete. Apply for the master's admission and the scholarship in parallel and let the committee decide.

Can I apply for both Master Mind and Science@Leuven at the same time?

Yes, and you should if you fit both. The two scholarships have different selection committees and different timelines, so a parallel application maximises your chances. If you win both, you will be asked to choose one. Master Mind typically offers higher total value.

My bachelor's was taught in English at a Nigerian university. Do I still need IELTS for KU Leuven?

For most KU Leuven master's programmes in the Faculty of Science, an MOI letter from your university is accepted in lieu of IELTS. For Faculty of Economics and Business programmes, IELTS or TOEFL is typically required regardless. For Engineering, it depends on the specific programme. Email the international admissions office for your target programme and ask in writing. Save their response.

How much does it actually cost to live in Leuven each month?

Leuven is one of the more affordable cities in Belgium, with student accommodation widely available at reasonable monthly rates. A careful student can live on a modest monthly budget if accommodation is the largest fixed cost. The Master Mind grant comfortably absorbs accommodation and most living costs for a single student.

Does KU Leuven help with the Belgian visa application?

Yes. Once you accept your admission, the KU Leuven International Office provides an admission letter and supporting documentation for your visa application. The visa application itself is your responsibility through your local Belgian embassy. Plan for 6 to 10 weeks of processing time.

Can I work part-time while studying at KU Leuven?

Yes. International students in Belgium can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during holidays. Combined with a KU Leuven scholarship, part-time work makes Leuven genuinely affordable.

I have a master's already. Can I still apply for a second master's at KU Leuven?

You can apply for admission to a second master's programme, but several KU Leuven scholarships (including Master Mind and Science@Leuven) exclude applicants who already hold a master's degree. The exception is the Global Minds Doctoral Scholarship, which requires a master's as the entry condition.

What is the realistic acceptance rate for KU Leuven master's programmes?

KU Leuven publishes acceptance rates by programme. The rates vary widely, from above 50% for some niche programmes to below 20% for the most competitive ones (computer science, AI, biomedical engineering). A first-class bachelor's degree with relevant experience puts you in serious contention for most programmes.

If I am not awarded any KU Leuven scholarship, what is the realistic next move?

Look at the Master Mind nomination through Ghent University or VUB, which sometimes nominates more international students from less famous backgrounds than KU Leuven does. Beyond Belgium, consider the DAAD Scholarship for Germany, SBW Berlin for socially engaged applicants, and Erasmus Mundus for joint European master's degrees that include Belgian university partners.

Build your KU Leuven scholarship strategy this week

Five things to do in the next seven days if KU Leuven 2027-2028 is genuinely your target:

Open the KU Leuven master's course catalogue right now. Identify two programmes that match your background and career interest.

For each of those two programmes, open the corresponding scholarship page on kuleuven.be. Note which scholarships are available, what their deadlines are, and what their specific eligibility requirements are.

Calculate your Scholaro GPA. Write the number down. If you are above 3.5, you have full optionality. If you are between 3.3 and 3.5, focus on the Science@Leuven path or programmes that weigh research and experience over GPA.

Email the international admissions office at KU Leuven this week to confirm whether your specific programme accepts an MOI letter or requires IELTS. Get the answer in writing.

If you do not have IELTS or TOEFL and you need it, book the test now. Lagos, Accra, Karachi, Lahore, Delhi, Mumbai, and Nairobi test centres typically have a 6 to 10 week wait list.

For the full Belgian scholarship landscape and how KU Leuven fits among the other Flemish and Francophone Belgian funding paths, read our fully funded scholarships in Belgium 2027 guide.

KU Leuven decides its scholarship pool by mid-January for the highest-value awards. By the time most applicants start preparing in autumn 2026, the strongest candidates have already done their work. Be in the early group.
